Project Overview: Cuckmere Haven

Working with the authorities, excavations were conducted at a number of sites in the valley, including pillboxes and anti-tank obstacles.

Description: Excavation and recording of a pillbox situated in a flood defence bank that had been damaged by previous (illegal) attempts to excavate it. The damage was restored by our reinstatement.

According to graffiti found in the embrasure, the pillbox was built by the Pioneer Corps in July 1940. Of unique design, construction was of very poor quality. The entrance tunnel retained pieces of wooden shuttering.

The video below details the excavation.
